Sr. Solution Engineer / Sr. System Administrator - Class N
Job Description
Pivcon, Inc is seeking a full-time experienced Senior System Administrator to support customer's computing and development environments and help develop solutions. The candidate should have 4 or more years of paid work experience as a System Administrator and a total of 8 years of computing experience in tasks beyond simple end-user use of computers, in any environment, including educational settings. Of those 8 years at least 5 of those years must including supporting Windows operating systems. Further, the candidate should have at least 2 years' experience managing compute instances on AWS or Azure cloud IaaS environments.
The ideal candidate has a proven track record of being motivated
and task oriented, with the ability to manage their time
efficiently and work independently and in teams from remote
locations. Excellent communication and project management skills
are desired.
All of Pivcon's technical positions are considered solution
engineers. This position's role is beyond standard system
administration. Every engineer is expected to contribute to the
client's overall needs by using their skills to develop solutions
and solve problems. This position is an excellent opportunity for a
system administrator to grow their career into other areas of IT,
such as development, security, and networking if desired.
This position requires residency in New York. The employee will be
likely be primarily working remotely from home to perform their
duties and thus requires a quiet place to work within their home
with a broadband connection. Pivcon may approve other remote
work locations, but all must be within the United States.
General Responsibilities
- Support Pivcon customers by providing excellent professional services designing, managing, and supporting Pivcon and Customer enterprise IT environments.
- Build, Deploy, Optimize, Manage Windows and Linux systems in both on-premises and cloud-based environments.
- Work as part of an extended team building and supporting IT solutions.Communicate technical details of solutions and project status to team members.
- Provide primary support in incident, crisis and change management.
- Provide support to Customers in resolving higher tier support issues.
- Contribute to and maintain system standards.
- Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
- Perform operating system and applications updates, patches, and security best practices on a schedule.
- Automate system administration tasks through administration scripting languages and tools.
- Design, plan, and manage backup, recovery, and disaster recovery systems.
- Design, Plan, Install Applications/Solutions for Customers and provide operational IT management of the solution.
- Assisting with DevOps goals of managing, supporting, and designing DevOps systems for Test, Development, UAT, and Production environments.
- Troubleshooting
- Perform other professional responsibilities and tasks as required by Pivcon and Pivcon Customer contracts.
AWS and other Cloud Platform Specific
Responsibilities
- Lead AWS deployment, configuration and optimization to provide a cloud-based platform to address business problems across multiple client engagements.
- Use Amazon CloudWatch to establish metrics and monitor the health/utilization of AWS resource.
- Deploy, manage, and operate scalable, highly available, and fault tolerant systems on AWS/Azure.
- Help customers migrate on-premises solutions to AWS.
- Implement, secure, and control the flow of data to and from AWS.
- Select the appropriate AWS service based on compute, data, or security requirements.
- Identify appropriate use of AWS operational best practices.
- Estimate AWS usage costs and identifying operational cost control mechanisms.
- Configure and understand VPC network and associated nuances for an AWS/Azure infrastructure.
- Configure and understand AWS IAM Role Based Access Control policies.
- Design and configure secured AWS infrastructure.
- User and access management for different AWS services.
General Requirements
- Bachelor's degree from accredited institution in computer
science, computer technology, information technology, or other
related field and at least four additional years of work experience
in system/network administration.
OR
Associate's degree from accredited institution in computer science, computer technology, information technology, or other related field and at least six additional years of work experience in system/network administration.
- At least 5 years experience managing Windows Servers (cloud or on-premises).
- At least 2 years experience managing Linux systems
- At least 2 years experience working in Cloud computing environments (AWS, Azure) of which at least one year must be in AWS.

- Strong security commitment and technical skills related to securing and auditing systems.
- Proven experience managing implementing and managing backups of on-premises and cloud-based systems.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to articulate results and issues to internal and client teams.
- Proven ability to work creatively and analytically in a problem-solving environment.
- Ability to work within a virtual national team environment and contribute to the overall timely delivery of multiple projects.
- Knowledge of current issues, practices, methodologies, and trends in the Information Technology/Cloud domain.
- Willingness to do occasional domestic travel. Historically, this has been less than 3 times per year for 2-3 nights.
- Typical hours are normal business hours, Monday through Friday. However, as this is a system administration position the position requires working occasional nights/weekends during maintenance windows to perform system updates/patches and respond to problems. Expectations should be at least 2 nights per month for security updates and likely a larger 2-4 day intense period once or twice a year for major upgrades. Occasional unplanned nights may be necessary for zero-day exploit security risks that require immediate unplanned updates or for unexpected system problems.
US Government 6C Public Trust
Clearance
Pivcon has contracts with customers that have US Federal
Government contracts and they require our employees to undergo
background checks to obtain at least a 6C Public Trust, and
potentially higher. This position will perform services for at
least one of these customers. Background checks are conducted by
agencies of the Government and not Pivcon, and may include
convictions, credit, travel, personal associations, organization
affiliations, past employer checks, and personal reference
checks.
It is not necessary to already have a US Government 6C Public
Trust to apply for this position. The background check
process can commence after you are hired in a provisional position
pending passing the background check. It is required to
pass the background check to remain in the position and the
background check application process would start immediately after
getting hired. Candidates that already have a valid
Government 6C Public Trust clearance level would not need to go
